Wisconsin Modeling Center
Project Number: 9KH71
Project Chief: Randy Hunt
Project Topics: Parameter Estimation, Model Calibration, Uncertainty Analysis
Cooperators: Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, S. S. Papadopulous Associates, Watermark Numerical Computing, Principia Mathematica, National Groundwater Centre for Research and Training (Australia)
Period of Project: ongoing
Problem
Increases in computing power and the availability of diverse sources of data have increased the complexity of environmental models, including those involving groundwater and surface water. Training and expertise to take advantage of these new capabilities have not kept pace in much of the modeling industry, however, and it has become unreasonable for all practitioners to develop expertise in all aspects of modeling, calibration, and uncertainty analysis. As a result, there is a pressing need to share expertise and assist in application of these powerful new tools.
Objectives
Objectives are to: (1) provide calibration and uncertainty analysis assistance to modelers to implement powerful new computational and analytical techniques, (2) provide training to to gain the skills necessary to apply to their projects in the future, (3) develop, implement, and disseminate state-of-the-art techniques and tools so that models are more effectively applied to today’s decision-making.
