Location: State of Wisconsin
Project Number: 9KN28
Period of Project: January 2004—Continuing
updated 2/20/07
Problem
Internal WDNR personnel and the general public could benefit from better access
to WDNR fish collection information. A dynamic and visual interpretation
of the presence/absence of fish species in Wisconsin would assist WDNR internal
personnel in their work as well as (eventually) provide information to the general
public. Easily accessible reference material for fish species found in Wisconsin
could be constantly updated though an online version of the "Fishes of Wisconsin" (Lyons,
Cochran, and Fago, 2001).
Objective
Develop a web-based mapping application to graphically represent the presence/absence/abundance
of fish species of Wisconsin (Fish Mapper). Create online forms for the customer
to perform quality assurance edits on the dataset. Develop an Online Reference
to the "Fishes of Wisconsin" that would integrate the Fish Mapper and allow users
to browse species or search for a specific species. Users could read about the
fish online or download a formatted document to print or save.
Approach
Use Oracle Spatial and MapViewer along with Java to produce the base layers and
an Oracle Database to store and query the data to display on the map. Develop
a series of Java Server Pages that query fish species text from an Oracle Database
and display the output as HTML pages.
Progress (January 2006 to June 2006)
The Fish Mapper (http://web2.er.usgs.gov/wdnrfish/)
was updated to incorporate a new standard map look-and-feel that has been created
while developing other mapping applications. Online forms have been created to
allow the customer to manage the map dataset.
A template was created showing what a page of the Online
Reference to Fishes document will look like. The database design was completed
and data loading was begun.
Plans (July 2006 to December 2006)
Develop an updated Fish Mapper that incorporates a tabbed navigation interface
and a set of canned queries to produce a pre-defined set of maps. The queries
will be further customizable by the user. Refresh the data from new data from
the WDNR Fish and Habitat Biology Database Continue adding species to the Online
Fishes of Wisconsin and incorporate layout features requested by the customer.
